2017/18 Holiday Appeal

a season and reason for giving

Christian A. Brown, Board President

Hartwood Foundation celebrated 44 years of service this past summer. From our early beginnings as a family cooperative organization sharing resources to the public-private community service organization of today, Hartwood has been an innovator in the development of community-based residential and respite services for persons with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

While the state’s redesigned Medicaid Waiver program and corresponding rate changes last year were an overdue welcome, the actual costs of supporting individuals to fully participate in the life of their local communities as they age in place far exceed the funds immediately available. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid’s Settings rule for Home and Community Based services, while again well-intentioned with its emphasis on individualized services and supports in every and all aspects of daily living, also places a heavy financial burden on providers such as Hartwood.

Please help us to meet the challenge of providing individualized person-centered services and supports to our current program participants while also seeking to position ourselves to serve those on the nearly 8,000 person wait list. Hartwood chose, from the start, to serve persons with significant and multiple disabilities. The modifications necessary to create and maintain barrier-free environments and the specialized equipment including wheelchair vans, mechanical lifts, and personal support devices that enable safe and comfortable community living are costly, but essential for the persons we serve.

Please give generously as you have in the past. With your help we can make a real difference in the lives of those we serve. We wish you a happy, healthy and safe Holiday Season!

With warmest regards,

Christian A. Brown, President
