Summer 1973- Summer 2017

Hartwood Foundation celebrates 44 years of service this Summer. From our beginnings as a family cooperative organization sharing resources, to the community service organization of today, Hartwood has been an innovator in the development of community-based residential and respite services for persons with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

While the state’s redesigned Medicaid Waiver program and corresponding rate changes were an overdue welcome, the actual costs of supporting individuals to fully participate in the life of their local communities as they age in place far exceed the funds immediately available. Additionally, the so-called Final Rule for Home and Community Based services published by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare, while again well-intentioned with its emphasis on individualized services and supports in every and all aspects of daily living, also places a heavy financial burden on providers such as Hartwood.

Please help us to meet the challenge of providing individualized person-centered services and supports to our current program participants while also seeking to position ourselves to serve those on the 8,000+ wait list. Hartwood has chosen, from its beginnings, to serve persons with significant and multiple disabilities. The modifications to provide barrier-free environments, the special equipment and personal support devices that enable safe and comfortable community living are costly, but necessary for the persons we serve.

Please give generously as you have in the past. With your help we can make a real difference in the lives of those we serve. We wish you a happy, healthy and safe Summer!

With warmest regards,

Christian A. Brown, President
